Balsam Bashing at Rose Hill Woods

The next Balsam Bash will be at Rose Hill Woods on Saturday 2nd June 2018 from 2pm – 4pm.

Meet inside the entrance to the woods next to the gates of Ashley Grange, Bronington Close, off Longley Lane, Northenden.
(Please note – all children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult)

Himalayan Balsam is a highly invasive non-native plant that can grow to 2-3m tall and crowds out smaller plants. Each plant can produce around 800 seeds in pods that when ripe “explode” – shooting the seeds up to 7m away.

Balsam bashing involves pulling up the growing plant shoots by hand.

No special equipment is required and gloves will be provided (although you may want to bring your own gardening gloves). It is advisable to wear suitable clothing, outdoor footwear and long trousers and sleeves as there may be nettles and brambles.

We will also be doing a litter pick and cutting back the Birch seedlings to prevent further growth, so if you have loppers please bring them along!
